I love the shape of my Louis chair and have established that the frame is constructed out of good quality materials.  The legs are not loose and the whole piece doesn't wobble.  It is fairly heavy, which means it is not constructed out of low quality wood.

The current fabric is stretched tightly so I am putting the new fabric over the old one.  (When you remove old fabric you have a perfect template to use.)   I pulled off the old gimp which was glued on and I pulled out every two staples all around the edge.  Be sure and add a two inch border to the size of the seat and back.  You will trim it when you are finished.  As I started to staple I noticed that the staples were not working.  The wood was so old it had hardened like a rock!  Okay, so now we go to Plan B, upholstery nails, size 10.  I pulled the fabric taut to the back and nailed about 12 inches at the center back of the chair.  Back to the front and nailed to the corners.  Here is where you have to pull the fabric pretty tight so you don't get any puckers.

Keep alternating front to back so you don't leave any slack.  Don't hammer the nails all the way in.  Reason--if you have puckers you have to remove the nails.  When you are satisfied with the smoothness of the fabric go back and finish nailing.  I used a hot glue gun to adhere the gimp all around the raw edges of the fabric, over the nails.  Voila, a new decorative chair that fits in better with my decor and I am being eco-friendly also!
